When they went to the famous and ancient city of Bukhara in Uzbekistan, he was struck when he saw the wall of an Islamic school. Some North Americans might have worried how militant the madrassa's teaching was inside, but Mr. Lu, a physicist with dual U.S. and Canadian citizenship, was absorbed by the pattern of 10-sided stars on the exterior. His own specialty as a Harvard doctoral student is the behaviour of substances called colloids, but as an undergraduate he had studied structures called "quasicrystals" with Paul Steinhardt, a cosmologist at Princetart of islamic architecture
